Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki passed away in Chennai at the age of 94. Renowned for her versatility across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam cinema, she acted in nearly 450 films and received prestigious honours including Padma Shri and Kalaimamani.
A Versatile Journey Across Indian Cinema:
- Born Sankaramanchi Janaki in 1931 at Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, she developed an early interest in performance through All India Radio dramas.
- She became an A-grade radio artiste because of her powerful voice and later entered cinema.
- Her Telugu debut came with Shavukaru (1950), directed by L.V. Prasad, while her Tamil debut was Valayapathi (1952).
- The prefix ‘Sowcar’ became associated with her after her debut film.
- During her five-decade career, she acted in around 450 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam.
- She worked with leading actors including Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, Rajkumar and N.T. Rama Rao.
- Her collaboration with director K. Balachander produced several memorable performances.
- Her notable roles included Puthiya Paravai, Uyarntha Manithan, Thillu Mullu, School Master and Soorya Manasam.

- She was also honoured with Tamil Nadu’s Kalaimamani Award.
- She acted alongside three Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers who were also prominent actors/political figures — M.G. Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa.
- In Malayalam cinema, her portrayal of Mariya in Soorya Manasam (1992) demonstrated her ability to portray emotionally complex characters.
- She was known for choosing progressive and strong female characters and described herself as a feminist.
- Before entering films, she participated in the Indian freedom movement during 1946–47 and worked with Durgabai Deshmukh.
- She also recalled serving Mahatma Gandhi as a young volunteer during his visit to the Hindi Prachar Sabha in Madras.
