India Becomes World’s Largest Rice Producer

India has emerged as the world’s largest producer of rice, surpassing China, according to a statement by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in New Delhi.

India’s rice production has reached 150.18 million tonnes, overtaking China’s output of 145.28 million tonnes. With this achievement, India has further strengthened its position not only as a major producer but also as a key supplier of rice to global markets.


Release of Improved Crop Varieties

At the same event, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) unveiled 184 improved varieties of 25 field crops, aimed at enhancing productivity, quality, and climate resilience.
Crop-wise distribution of released varieties:

  • Cereals – 122
    Pulses – 6
    Oilseeds – 13
    Fodder crops – 11
    Sugarcane – 6
    Cotton – 24
    Jute – 1
    Tobacco – 1

Focus on High-Yielding and Climate-Resilient Seeds

The Agriculture Minister stated that India has entered a new phase of agricultural revolution, driven by the development of high-yielding and climate-resilient seed varieties. He emphasized the need for rapid dissemination of these seeds to ensure that farmers benefit without delay.
Pulses and Oilseeds: Strategic Priority
The minister also urged agricultural scientists to focus on increasing the production of pulses and oilseeds, highlighting their importance in achieving self-sufficiency and reducing import dependence.
