Bose and Gandhi-differences

Highlight the differences in the approach of Subash Chandra Bose and Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for freedom. 

M K Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose were legendary personalities in the Indian National Movement. They both made significant contributions towards achieving independence. The relationship between both is important as both are accepted to have different ideological approaches. In the initial years, Bose was a supporter of Gandhi’s methods but by the end of the 1930s, Bose diverted to finding new strategies. He was dissatisfied by the lack of momentum in the national movement. 

• Subhash Chandra Bose was a radical thinker. Towards the end of civil disobedience movement, Subhash harrowed around the working class movement. He inspired the students and the under privileged towards a radical and militant temper. Gandhi on the other hand was committed to non-violence and peaceful mass movements. 
• Subhash laid emphasis on the industrialization of India and planned economic growth based on Soviet pattern. Subash confined himself to looking for new strategies in conducting Indian National Movement. In April 1939, he left the Congress and organized the Forward Bloc and Kisan Sabha. Gandhi believed in the trusteeship system. He aspired for self-sustained village economies.
• Bose believed in the complete independence of India. He wanted an immediate mass struggle from the people. However, Gandhi stressed on struggle-truce-struggle method in a phased manner. 
• Bose was an internationalist. In November 1941, he escaped to Berlin and met with Hitler. He organized the Indian National Army or Azad Hind Fauj with the help of Japanese allies. Gandhi relied on indigenous methods such as satyagraha and swadeshi.  

However, the relationship between both was also marked by mutual respect for each other. Gandhi had always acknowledged the contribution of Bose where he broke religious barriers among the soldiers of Azad Hind Fauz. Bose credited Gandhi for the involvement of women in the Indian national movement. Though they differed in their ideological principles and means, Bose and Gandhi were both committed to secular and free India.
