ICG Ship Amulya Commissioned to Strengthen Maritime Security

Why in the News?

The Indian Coast Guard commissioned ICG Ship Amulya, the third Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessel, at Goa. Built with over 60% indigenous components, it enhances coastal surveillance, maritime security, and demonstrates self-reliance under Atmanirbhar Bharat, while also considering coastal regulation zone guidelines.

Commissioning and Indigenous Build:

  • ICG Ship Amulya was commissioned at Goa, marking the addition of the third Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessel to the Coast Guard fleet, enhancing capabilities for environmental protection and clearance monitoring.
  • Built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the vessel features over 60% Indian-made components, reflecting India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and commitment to environmental impact assessment in shipbuilding.
  • The ship is 51 metres long, symbolising the Coast Guard’s commitment to safe, secure, and clean seas, aligning with the principles of environmental democracy.
  • Its name, Amulya, means priceless, highlighting its value in protecting maritime interests and enforcing coastal regulation zone norms.
  • The commissioning aligns with Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, promoting domestic defence production with a focus on environmentally conscious manufacturing.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

  • Powered by two 3,000-kilowatt diesel engines, the ship can achieve a top speed of 27 knots with an operational range of 1,500 nautical miles, facilitating rapid response to environmental emergencies.
  • Equipped with controllable pitch propellers, modern gearboxes, and integrated control and surveillance systems for operational efficiency and environmental monitoring.
  • Armed with a 30-mm main gun and two remote-controlled 12.7-mm guns, providing robust defence and interdiction capabilities for enforcing maritime laws and environmental regulations.
  • The vessel is capable of conducting coastal surveillance, anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue, and pollution response along the eastern coast of India, contributing to a pollution-free environment in coastal areas.
  • Advanced systems enable the ship to perform real-time monitoring and coordinated maritime security operations effectively, including environmental impact assessments of coastal activities.
