Why in News ?

India and Japan are seeking to deepen cooperation in startups, deep technology, innovation and MSMEs. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has proposed a four-pillar framework, including a $1 billion deep-tech fund, to strengthen investment, research and cross-border technology partnerships.

India-Japan Startup & Deep-Tech Cooperation:

  •     India and Japan aim to build stronger links between their startup and innovation ecosystems, with emphasis on deeptech, advanced manufacturing and MSMEs.
  •     Speaking at the India-Japan Startup Roundtable in Tokyo, Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem.
  •     Nearly 2.5 lakh startups have been established in India over the past decade.

  •     Indian startups showcased capabilities in aerospace, defence, drones, AI, healthcare, prosthetics, robotics, mobility and warehouse automation.

Four-Pillar Framework for Partnership

  •     Goyal proposed a four-pillar framework for the next phase of bilateral startup cooperation:

○      Japan-India Deep-Tech Capital Corridor to mobilise patient capital for early-stage research, innovation and commercialisation.

○      Two-Way Innovation Bridge connecting universities, incubators, R&D institutions, laboratories and testing facilities.

○      Greater manufacturing and technology integration between both countries.

○      Joint startup pitching platforms enabling regular interaction among founders, corporations, venture funds and strategic investors.

  •     The proposed second Fund of Funds, worth about $1 billion, is expected to focus particularly on deep-tech enterprises.
  •     Japanese investors have been encouraged to participate in this fund.
  •     Discussions also covered technology validation, precision manufacturing, investment, market access and integration into Japanese and global supply chains.

 Key points: India-Japan Economic Partnership

  •     Japan is an important economic and technological partner for India under the broader Special and Global Strategic Partnership.
  •     Cooperation spans trade, infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, investment and innovation.
  •     JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) plays a significant role in supporting development projects and economic cooperation in India.
  •     The partnership can help India access Japanese capital, precision technology and manufacturing expertise.
  •     Japan can benefit from India’s large market, digital ecosystem and entrepreneurial talent.
  •     The startup partnership can promote technology transfer, employment generation, supply-chain diversification and commercialisation of research.
  •     A stronger India-Japan innovation ecosystem can contribute to Atmanirbhar Bharat, resilient global supply chains and India’s transition towards a high-value, technology-driven economy.
