Government Launches Exclusive Handloom Expo and Handloom Haat Initiative

On the occasion of the 11th National Handloom Day (August 5, 2025), the Ministry of Textiles launched an exclusive handloom expo and handloom haat at Janpath, New Delhi, to celebrate India’s rich textile heritage and support traditional artisans. This initiative aims to promote sustainable development and boost the rural livelihood of weavers and artisans across the country.
Celebration of Handloom Legacy:
- The event was organised by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) to showcase the diverse handloom weaving traditions of India.
- Union Minister Giriraj Singh and Minister of State Pabitra Margherita inaugurated the celebrations in Delhi NCR, emphasizing the government’s commitment to preserve handloom traditions.
- The minister emphasized that handlooms represent India’s cultural identity and are vital for the rural economy and indigenous industries.
- He reiterated the government’s commitment to promote traditional weaving methods by supporting weavers, improving market linkages, and ensuring sustainable economic growth for the handloom sector.
Exclusive Handloom Expo and ‘Handloom Haat’
- The exclusive handloom expo, open till August 10, showcases 116 distinct weaves by master weavers from across India, featuring authentic handloom products made using natural dyes.
- It offers visitors live loom demonstrations, promoting both education and awareness about regional handloom traditions and indigenous craftsmanship.
- The newly launched ‘handloom haat’ is a mobile retail initiative aimed at taking handloom products directly to consumers, boosting artisan income through direct-to-consumer sales and improving market outreach.
- This traveling handloom marketplace serves as a living textile museum, connecting urban audiences with the rich diversity of India’s handloom heritage.
