UMEX–SimTEX 2026 Highlights Autonomous Defence Technologies

The UMEX and SimTEX 2026 exhibitions opened in Abu Dhabi, showcasing global advances in unmanned systems, robotics, AI, and simulation technologies, with record international participation, underlining the growing strategic importance of autonomous defence and security solutions. The event also highlighted the increasing role of environmental considerations in defense technologies, including the need for environmental clearances and impact assessments.

UMEX–SimTEX 2026: Scale and Key Highlights:

  • The Unmanned Systems Exhibition (UMEX) and Simulation and Training Exhibition (SimTEX) opened at the ADNEC Centre, running from January 20–22, 2026.
  • Now in its seventh edition, the event recorded its largest participation since 2015, with 375 companies and brands from 38 countries.
  • Around 55% exhibitors are international, reflecting the globalisation of autonomous and unmanned technologies.
  • The UAE pavilion emerged as the largest, underlining national focus on defence innovation and indigenisation.
  • A major attraction was the AI versus human pilot drone challenge, organised with the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, highlighting progress in autonomous flight systems and their potential for creating a pollution free environment.

Technology Showcase and Strategic Focus

  • Exhibitions featured mission-ready unmanned aerial and ground systems, robotics, counter-drone technologies, and AI-enabled platforms, with discussions on their environmental impact assessment.
  • Live demonstrations simulated real-world defence and security scenarios, bridging the gap between research and operational deployment, while considering the precautionary principle in technology adoption.
  • EDGE Group participated as a strategic partner, showcasing its expanding portfolio of advanced autonomous systems.
  • A Ministry of Defence coding challenge engaged participants in solving defence technology problems using coding and artificial intelligence, incorporating aspects of environmental jurisprudence.
  • Alongside defence, the event highlighted civilian applications such as logistics, energy, agriculture, smart cities, and public safety, showing dual-use convergence and the need for ex-post facto environmental clearances in some cases.
