NATO Conducts Arctic Military Exercise Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has begun its biennial Arctic military exercise “Cold Response”, involving thousands of troops from multiple countries. The exercise comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Arctic region, including disputes related to Greenland’s strategic importance.

NATO’s Arctic Military Exercise: Cold Response

  • NATO has launched its biennial Arctic military exercise, named Cold Response, aimed at strengthening military coordination in the Arctic region.

  • The drills are scheduled to take place from March 9 to March 19, involving approximately 25,000 troops from 14 participating countries.

  • Major participants include the United States, Denmark, and other NATO allies, with the U.S. deploying around 4,000 troops.

  • The exercise emphasises the role of civilian agencies and infrastructure in supporting military logistics during extreme Arctic conditions.

  • Cold Response is now integrated into “Arctic Sentry”, a broader NATO initiative designed to enhance the alliance’s strategic presence in the polar region.

Strategic Context and Geopolitical Tensions

  • The exercise takes place amid heightened geopolitical tensions related to U.S. interest in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, which is also a NATO member.

  • U.S. President Donald Trump has argued that Greenland is strategically important to counter Russian and Chinese activities in the Arctic.

  • However, the governments of Denmark and Greenland have clearly stated that the island is not for sale.

  • The Arctic is becoming increasingly important due to emerging sea routes, natural resources, and strategic military positioning.

  • NATO’s increased presence reflects growing concerns about security competition and influence in the polar region.
