MILAN 2026 Strengthens India’s Maritime Cooperation Vision

Why in the News ?

The Indian Navy successfully concluded the MILAN 2026 multilateral maritime exercise aboard INS Vikrant near Visakhapatnam. With participation from several friendly foreign countries, the exercise strengthened maritime coordination, operational readiness, and regional security cooperation, reinforcing India’s leadership in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Key Highlights of MILAN 2026 Exercise:

  • The MILAN 2026 naval exercise concluded with a formal ceremony held onboard INS Vikrant, India’s indigenously built aircraft carrier, off the Visakhapatnam coast in the Bay of Bengal, adhering to coastal regulation zone norms and maritime environmental protocols.

  • The closing ceremony was presided over by Rear Admiral Alok Ananda, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, along with senior officers from participating navies.

  • The exercise witnessed participation of 42 ships and submarines and 29 aircraft, making it one of the largest MILAN editions in scale and operational diversity, conducted with strict adherence to environmental impact assessment guidelines.

  • A total of 18 warships from friendly foreign countries took part, reflecting India’s growing maritime partnerships and defence diplomacy.

  • The theme of the exercise, “Camaraderie, Cooperation, Collaboration,” emphasized strengthening mutual trust, interoperability, and coordinated maritime operations among participating nations while promoting a pollution free environment in the Indian Ocean Region.

Strategic Significance and Operational Outcomes

  • The exercise enhanced operational coordination among participating navies, improving their ability to respond effectively to maritime threats, including piracy, terrorism, and disaster situations, following the precautionary principle in maritime security operations.

  • It helped strengthen interoperability, allowing navies to operate together smoothly during joint missions and humanitarian assistance operations.

  • MILAN 2026 contributed to building collective maritime security, ensuring safe and secure sea lanes crucial for global trade and energy transportation, while upholding the polluter pays principle in maritime operations.

  • The exercise reinforced India’s regional leadership role, promoting security cooperation and trust-building in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) through environmental democracy and sustainable maritime practices.

  • Participating officers appreciated the professional planning, training effectiveness, and coordination, which enhanced combat readiness and operational preparedness of all navies involved.

About MILAN Exercise and India’s Maritime Vision:

MILAN Exercise is a multilateral naval exercise conducted by the Indian Navy, first launched in 1995 to promote naval cooperation and regional security.

It is hosted in the Bay of Bengal, mainly at Visakhapatnam, and involves participation from friendly foreign countries, especially from the Indo-Pacific region, with all operations complying with environmental clearances and maritime regulations.

The exercise aligns with India’s MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), focusing on collective maritime security and development within the framework of environmental jurisprudence.

MILAN supports India’s broader strategic doctrine of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR), which promotes peace, stability, and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

Such exercises strengthen defence diplomacy, maritime domain awareness, and naval preparedness, while enhancing India’s image as a net security provider in the Indo-Pacific region.
