India’s Role Recognised in Global Food Standards

Why in the News ?

India’s contribution to global food regulation was lauded during the 88th Codex Executive Committee meeting (CCEXEC 88) held in Rome. India’s long-standing leadership in millet standards and new work proposals for turmeric and broccoli were particularly appreciated, highlighting the country’s role as a key contributor to international standards. The FAO recognition of India’s efforts underscores the country’s growing influence in shaping global food safety norms.

India’s Recognition at Codex Meet:

● The 88th session of CCEXEC was held at FAO Headquarters, Rome from 14–18 July 2025.

● India’s proactive role in the Codex Alimentarius Commission was praised, especially in standard setting and standards work. The committee commended India’s evaluation methods for developing comprehensive food safety guidelines.

● The committee appreciated India’s leadership in the millet standards initiative formulation, recognizing India’s efforts in promoting millets production. The April cereals committee meeting played a crucial role in finalizing standards for whole millet grains.

● These standards were recommended for final adoption at CAC48, scheduled for November 2025, marking a significant recognition of India’s contributions. The reference finalised during this process will serve as a benchmark for global millet standards.

● India’s efforts were projected by a delegation of senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and FSSAI.

New Standard Proposals Co-Chaired by India

● India will co-chair new proposals for setting food standards for fresh turmeric and broccoli, further cementing its position at the center stage of global food safety efforts.

● These proposals reflect India’s rising leadership in the Codex framework for global food governance and its commitment to develop standards. The official release of these proposals is expected to garner international attention.

● Focus on diverse, nutritious crops aligns with India’s push for traditional and climate-resilient foods, showcasing the country’s innovative approach to international standards.

● India’s technical input supports harmonised food safety regulations and international trade facilitation, demonstrating its capacity-building initiatives in the field. The country’s successful training initiatives have enhanced its ability to contribute effectively to global food standards.

● Continued leadership positions India as a rule-maker in global food systems, highlighting its role in regional cooperation and successful mentorship in standards work. India’s future efforts will likely focus on expanding its influence in setting international food safety norms.
