Indian Navy to Commission New Stealth Frigates INS Udaygiri, INS Himgiri

Why in the News?

The Indian Navy is set to commission two advanced frontline navy ships, the stealth frigates INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri, on August 26, 2025 in Visakhapatnam — marking the first-ever simultaneous commissioning of two major surface combatants from different Indian shipyards. This event follows recent commissionings of other notable vessels like the destroyer INS Surat and frigate INS Nilgiri, further strengthening India’s naval capabilities.

Strategic and Industrial Significance

  • First simultaneous commissioning of two major surface combatants from two different Indian shipyards — demonstrating India’s multi-yard warship building capability.
  • Highlights India’s progress towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India” initiatives.
  • Showcases the synergy between naval design and domestic shipbuilding industries in Mumbai and Kolkata, with an industrial ecosystem spanning over 200 MSMEs contributing to the project.
  • Boosts India’s maritime presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) amid growing geopolitical challenges, positioning the nation as a rising maritime power.
  • Reflects commitment to naval modernisation and enhancing blue-water operational capabilities.

Event and Broader Implications

  • Commissioning ceremony scheduled for August 26, 2025 in Visakhapatnam — a key hub for Eastern Naval Command operations.
  • Strengthens surface warfare strength of the Indian Navy, complementing existing fleets and accelerating naval modernisation.
  • Enhances India’s ability to undertake multi-domain naval operations, from anti-submarine warfare to long-range strike missions.
  • Symbolises a major milestone in the Indian Navy’s journey towards indigenous, technologically advanced maritime platforms.
  • Reinforces India’s ambition to be a maritime power with strong shipbuilding infrastructure capable of meeting future security challenges in challenging maritime environments.

Key Features of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri:

INS Udaygiri: Second ship under Project 17A stealth frigates, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
INS Himgiri: First of the P17A ships constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.
Project 17A: Successor to Project 17 (Shivalik-class), its predecessor, incorporating advanced stealth features, enhanced automation, and improved survivability.
● Udaygiri is the 100th ship designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau — a landmark achievement in indigenous naval design.
● Both stealth frigates are equipped with modern underwater weapon systems, sensors, and stealth technology to enhance naval combat capabilities, representing a significant leap in indigenous platforms commissioning.
