India Emerges World’s Largest Rice Producer

Why in the News ?

India has overtaken China to become the world’s largest rice producer, with output touching 150.18 million tonnes, as announced by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, alongside the release of 184 improved crop varieties by ICAR.

India’s Rice Production Milestone:

  • Global Leadership:

    • India has surpassed China (145.28 million tonnes) to become the largest rice producer globally.
    • India’s rice output now stands at 18 million tonnes, reflecting sustained productivity growth.
  • Export Strength:

    • India is increasingly supplying rice to overseas markets, reinforcing its role in global food security.
    • Rice exports enhance agricultural trade balance and farmers’ income.
  • Policy & Farmer Effort:

    • The achievement was attributed to resilient farmers, improved seeds, and supportive government policies.
    • Expansion of irrigation, MSP support, and research-driven farming practices contributed to higher yields.
  • Agricultural Transformation:

    • The Minister described this phase as a new era of agricultural revolution, driven by high-yielding and climate-resilient seeds.

Release of 184 Improved Crop Varieties

  • ICAR Initiative:

    • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) unveiled 184 advanced varieties of 25 field crops.
  • Crop-wise Break-up:

    • Cereals – 122, Pulses – 6, Oilseeds – 13, Fodder crops – 11, Sugarcane – 6, Cotton – 24, and one each of jute and tobacco.
  • Farmer Benefits:

    • New varieties promise higher yields, better quality produce, and climate resilience.
    • Farmers are expected to gain through improved productivity and income stability.
  • Implementation Focus:

    • The Minister directed officials to ensure rapid dissemination of quality seeds to farmers’ fields.
    • Scientists were urged to prioritise pulses and oilseeds to reduce import dependence and achieve self-sufficiency.
