India Commissions Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel Samudra Pratap

 The Indian Coast Guard commissioned its first indigenously designed pollution control vessel, Samudra Pratap, in Goa on January 5, 2026, strengthening marine pollution response, maritime security, and Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

  • Samudra Pratap is the first indigenous pollution control vessel of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
  • It was commissioned by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
  • The vessel has over 60% indigenous content, reflecting the push for self-reliance in defence.
  • It is a 5-metre-long, 4,200-tonne ship with a top speed exceeding 22 knots.
  • The ship has an impressive endurance of 6,000 nautical miles, enabling long-duration missions.
  • Delivered formally to the Coast Guard in December 2025, its commissioning comes amid heightened maritime vigilance.
