HM LAUNCHES ‘NEXT-GEN SHIELD AGAINST TERROR’

Why in the News?

  • Major security launch: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the National IED Data Management System (NIDMS).
  • Counter-terror push: The system is aimed at strengthening India’s response to IED blasts and terror incidents.
  • Tech-driven tool: NIDMS has been described as a “next-generation security shield” against terrorism.

WHAT IS NIDMS AND WHO DEVELOPED IT?

  • Lead agency: Developed by the National Security Guards (NSG).
  • Institutional support: Built with inputs from Rashtriya Raksha University, IIT Delhi, National Investigation Agency, and Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
  • Core objective: To collect, analyse, and disseminate data on all bombing incidents across India.
  • User base: Currently has 800 users from multiple security and investigation agencies.

KEY FEATURES AND OPERATIONAL VALUE

  • AI-powered analysis: Uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to study bombing patterns.
  • Signature linkage: Identifies linkages between different IED and blast incidents.
  • Real-time platform: Enables real-time information sharing among counter-terror agencies.
  • Predictive capability: Can conduct predictive analysis to help prevent future attacks.
  • Investigation aid: Supports post-blast investigations and trend analysis nationwide.

IED THREAT AND INTERNAL SECURITY IN INDIA

●      Major challenge: Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are among the deadliest internal security threats.

●      Targets: Affect both civilians and security forces in terror and insurgency-hit regions.

●      Data importance: Centralised databases improve forensics, intelligence sharing, and prevention.

●      Global practice: Advanced countries rely on bomb data centres for counter-terror strategy.

●      Strategic value: Tools like NIDMS enhance national preparedness and intelligence-led policing.
