Why in News ?

A comprehensive bird survey in Silent Valley National Park, Kerala, has documented 192 bird species, highlighting the region’s exceptional avian biodiversity. The survey covered the entire park and recorded several Western Ghats endemic and migratory species, strengthening conservation data.

Major Findings of the Silent Valley Bird Survey:

  • A large-scale bird survey conducted from March 6–8 in Silent Valley National Park recorded 192 species of birds.

  • The survey covered both the core and buffer zones of the national park, ensuring a comprehensive biodiversity assessment.

  • Around 85 birdwatchers from Kerala and Tamil Nadu participated in the initiative.

  • Rare migratory species such as the Asian house martin and Western house martin were recorded during the survey.

  • Among the forest camps surveyed, Anavaayi recorded the highest diversity with 95 species, followed by Thathengalam (94), Uppukandam (93), and Keeripara (92).

Endemic and Breeding Bird Species Identified

  • The survey documented 20 bird species endemic to the Western Ghats, reflecting the ecological importance of the region.

  • Notable endemic species include the Nilgiri laughingthrush, Black-and-orange flycatcher, White-bellied treepie, Nilgiri pipit, White-bellied blue flycatcher, and Nilgiri sholakili.

  • Evidence of breeding activity in 11 species was also recorded, indicating healthy habitat conditions.

About Silent Valley National Park :

Silent Valley National Park: Located in Palakkad district of Kerala, it forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats.

The park protects one of the last remaining tracts of tropical evergreen rainforest in India.

It is renowned for its high biodiversity and endemic species, including rare birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants.

The park is drained by the Kunthipuzha River, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha River.

Silent Valley gained national attention during the Silent Valley conservation movement in the 1970s–80s, which successfully prevented the construction of a hydroelectric project in the area.
