Aunta–Simaria Ganga Bridge Project to Boost Bihar Connectivity

Why in the News ?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Aunta–Simaria Project in Gaya, Bihar on 22nd August 2025. The nearly 2-km-long Ganga bridge will improve connectivity between Mokama (Patna District) and Begusarai, reducing travel distance for heavy vehicles by almost 100 km.

Project Details & Key Features:

The project includes a 2-km-long parallel bridge constructed alongside the old Rajendra Setu (rail-cum-road bridge).

Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ease traffic congestion.

Designed to support heavy vehicle movement with better load capacity than the old bridge.

The project aims to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle operation costs, while improving road safety.

Travel time between North Bihar and South Bihar will be significantly cut down.

Foundation stone was laid in 2017 by PM Modi, highlighting its long-term importance for regional development.

Economic & Strategic Importance

Provides direct connectivity between Mokama (Patna District) and Begusarai, improving trade and mobility.

Reduces the extra 100 km detour heavy vehicles had to take due to congestion at Rajendra Setu.

Will boost the industrial belt of Begusarai, often called the “Manchester of Bihar,” by facilitating logistics.

Enhances supply chain efficiency for agricultural produce, petroleum, and fertilizer industries.

Contributes to economic integration of North and South Bihar, fostering inclusive development.

Expected to enhance regional employment opportunities by improving accessibility.

Key Infrastructure and Institutions:

  Rajendra Setu:

A 2-lane rail-cum-road bridge inaugurated in 1959 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President.

Historically significant as the first bridge across the Ganga in independent India.

NHAI (National Highways Authority of India):

  Established under NHAI Act, 1988.

Functions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Responsible for development, maintenance, and management of National Highways across India.
