UIDAI Launches Bug Bounty Programme to Secure Aadhaar

Why in the News ?

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched its first structured Bug Bounty Programme to strengthen the cybersecurity of the Aadhaar ecosystem. The initiative invites ethical hackers and security researchers to identify vulnerabilities in key UIDAI digital platforms.

UIDAI’s Bug Bounty Programme Initiative:

  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a structured Bug Bounty Programme aimed at improving the security of the Aadhaar digital ecosystem.

  • The initiative invites independent cybersecurity experts and ethical hackers to identify potential vulnerabilities or hidden security risks in UIDAI systems.

  • The programme forms an additional layer of protection, helping authorities proactively detect and address security loopholes before they can be exploited.

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated that this initiative reinforces UIDAI’s commitment to maintaining robust digital security for Aadhaar users.

  •     Such programmes are widely used globally by technology organisations to enhance system resilience and protect digital infrastructure.

Scope and Implementation of the Programme

  • Under the programme, a panel of 20 experienced cybersecurity researchers and ethical hackers has been selected to participate.

  • These experts will test the security of major UIDAI digital platforms, including the UIDAI official website, the myAadhaar portal, and the Secure QR Code application.

  • The initiative allows participants to examine system architecture and identify potential security flaws through controlled testing mechanisms.

  • Findings from the programme will help UIDAI improve security protocols, strengthen encryption frameworks, and enhance data protection mechanisms.

  •     The initiative demonstrates India’s efforts to ensure trust, transparency, and security in its digital identity infrastructure.

About Aadhaar and UIDAI:

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued to residents of India by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

UIDAI was established under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016.

Aadhaar uses biometric authentication, including fingerprints and iris scans, along with demographic data for identity verification.

The system supports various government welfare schemes, financial inclusion programmes, and digital service delivery platforms.

Aadhaar plays a key role in initiatives such as Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), helping reduce leakages and improving transparency in subsidy distribution.
