West Asia Conflict Triggers Panic Selling by Aqua Farmers

Why in the News ?

Rumours of shipping disruptions due to the Israel–Iran conflict have led to panic selling of shrimp and seafood by aquaculture farmers in Andhra Pradesh. Farmers fear export delays, causing them to harvest early and sell produce at significantly lower domestic prices.

Panic Selling Among Aquaculture Farmers:

  • The ongoing West Asia geopolitical crisis, particularly the Israel–Iran conflict, has triggered concerns about disruptions in international shipping routes.

  • These rumours have led many aquaculture farmers in Andhra Pradesh to prematurely harvest shrimp and fish stocks.

  • Farmers fear that export shipments may be delayed or cancelled, which could cause losses due to the perishable nature of seafood products.

  • As a result, large quantities of shrimp are being dumped into domestic markets, leading to a sharp fall in prices.

  • For example, 60-count shrimp, which usually sells for about ₹300 per kg, is currently being sold at around ₹220 per kg due to oversupply.

Importance of Aquaculture Exports for Andhra Pradesh

  • Andhra Pradesh is one of India’s largest aquaculture production hubs, with shrimp and fish farming spread across nearly four lakh acres.

  • Major aquaculture districts include East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, Konaseema, Krishna, Visakhapatnam, Nellore, Prakasam, and Guntur.

  • According to the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), India exported about 17.8 lakh tonnes of seafood in 2023–24.

  • Andhra Pradesh alone contributes 30–35% of India’s seafood exports, valued at nearly ₹21,000 crore.

  • Key export destinations include the United States, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Canada, Italy, Russia, and Gulf countries.
