India Conducts Joint Military Exercises with Japan, US
Why in the News ?
India has commenced two major joint military exercises — DHARMA GUARDIAN with Japan in Uttarakhand and VAJRA PRAHAR with the United States in Himachal Pradesh. These exercises aim to strengthen defence cooperation, interoperability, and joint operational capabilities amid evolving regional and global security challenges.

Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN: India–Japan Defence Cooperation
- 7th edition held: The 7th edition of Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN is being conducted between the Indian Army and Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) in Uttarakhand.
- Participation strength: Around 120 military personnel from each country are participating in the joint exercise.
- Indian contingent: India is represented by troops from the Ladakh Scouts, known for their expertise in mountain warfare.
- Japanese contingent: Japan’s participation includes soldiers from the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force.
- Strategic objective: The exercise focuses on enhancing joint operational capabilities in semi-urban environments, improving coordination, tactical skills, and military interoperability.
Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR: India–US Special Forces Collaboration
- 16th edition conducted: The 16th edition of Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR is being held at the Special Forces Training School, Bakloh (Himachal Pradesh).
- Special Forces participation: The Indian Army has deployed 45 Special Forces personnel, while the US is represented by 12 Green Berets from its Special Forces.
- Focus on special operations: The exercise aims to strengthen special operations capabilities, including counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing, and joint tactical planning.
- Enhancing interoperability: It improves coordination, interoperability, and exchange of military expertise between Indian and US Special Forces.
- Strategic partnership: The exercise reflects growing India–US defence cooperation, especially in addressing emerging global and regional security threats, complementing broader frameworks including the bilateral investment treaty discussions between both nations.
