Second Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough Achieved in Bullet Train Project

Why in the News?

The Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the successful breakthrough of the second mountain tunnel of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project in Palghar, Maharashtra, marking a major milestone in India’s first bullet train corridor. This achievement comes after obtaining the necessary environmental clearances and conducting a thorough environmental impact assessment for the project.

Major Milestone in MAHSR Project

  • Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the breakthrough of the second mountain tunnel in Palghar district.
  • The tunnel is 454 metres long and 14.4 metres wide, designed to accommodate both up and down tracks of the bullet train.
  • This breakthrough was achieved within one month of the first tunnel breakthrough on 2 January, reflecting rapid construction progress while adhering to environmental jurisprudence.
  • The development is part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project, India’s first high-speed rail corridor, which has undergone rigorous environmental clearance processes.
  • The Minister praised engineers and workers, noting that the project showcases India’s growing technical and execution capabilities while following the precautionary principle in environmental matters.

Technology, Timelines and Regional Impact

  • Several advanced construction technologies and heavy machines used in the project are manufactured in India, aligning with Atmanirbhar Bharat goals and promoting a pollution-free environment.
  • The Gujarat section of the bullet train corridor is expected to begin commercial operations next year, following ex post facto environmental clearances where necessary.
  • High-speed rail services are planned to extend up to Thane by 2028, with Mumbai connectivity by 2029.
  • The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, boost regional connectivity, and support economic growth while maintaining environmental sustainability.
  • It also strengthens India’s position in modern rail infrastructure and urban mobility solutions, setting new standards in environmental jurisprudence for large-scale projects.

About High-Speed Rail and Infrastructure Development:

High-Speed Rail (HSR) refers to rail systems operating at speeds above 250 kmph, requiring dedicated tracks and advanced signalling.
– The MAHSR project is being developed using Japanese Shinkansen technology, known for safety, punctuality, and adherence to environmental standards.
Palghar district is emerging as a key infrastructure hub with projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and the upcoming Vadhvan Port, all of which have undergone environmental impact assessments.
– Local MP Hemant Vishnu Savara highlighted the district’s rapid development due to integrated transport projects, emphasizing the balance between progress and environmental conservation.
– The project’s implementation considers the Forest Conservation Act and Coastal Regulation Zone norms, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
