ISRO Launches BlueBird Satellite in Commercial Milestone

Why in the News?

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the BlueBird Block-2 communication satellite of AST SpaceMobile (USA) using LVM3-M6, marking the largest commercial communications satellite deployment into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by India. This launch, subject to environmental clearances and rigorous environmental impact assessment, represents a significant milestone in India’s space program. The process adheres to the EIA notification guidelines, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

About BlueBird Block-2 Mission:

  • BlueBird Block-2 is a next-generation commercial communication satellite developed by AST SpaceMobile, a US-based company.
  • It is designed to deliver space-based cellular broadband connectivity directly to standard mobile smartphones, without requiring special ground infrastructure.
  • Once deployed, it will become the largest commercial communications satellite to be placed in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • The mission reflects India’s growing role in the global commercial space launch market, especially for private international clients.
  • The launch highlights ISRO’s capability to support satellite-based internet and telecom services, crucial for bridging the digital divide in remote regions.

Role of LVM3 and ISRO’s Capabilities

  • The satellite will be launched aboard Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3-M6), ISRO’s heavy-lift launch vehicle.
  • LVM3 is a three-stage launch system capable of placing large payloads into LEO and GTO.
  • Earlier, LVM3 was used for prestigious missions such as Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3, strengthening its reliability.
  • It has also successfully launched two OneWeb missions, deploying 72 satellites, demonstrating India’s growing footprint in commercial satellite launches.
  • The recent M5-CMS-03 mission further validated LVM3’s mission readiness and consistency for complex payloads.
  • ISRO conducts thorough environmental impact assessments for each mission, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This includes addressing concerns about ex post facto or retrospective environmental clearances, aligning with evolving environmental jurisprudence.

About Communication Satellites & LEO:

Low Earth Orbit (LEO): Extends from about 160 km to 2,000 km above Earth; ideal for low-latency communication services.
Communication Satellites: Enable telephony, broadband, television broadcasting, navigation, and disaster management.
Direct-to-Device Connectivity: Emerging technology allowing satellites to connect directly with ordinary smartphones, reducing dependence on terrestrial towers.
Commercial Space Sector: Aligns with India’s space sector reforms encouraging private participation and foreign collaboration, while adhering to the precautionary principle in environmental matters.
