Why in the News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the Bihar Rajya Jeevika Nidhi Saakh Sahkari Sangh Limited, aimed at providing affordable funds for skill development and art integrated education to women entrepreneurs associated with Jeevika. The initiative strengthens financial inclusion, rural livelihoods, and women empowerment through government-supported cooperative financing, promoting holistic development and creative thinking among rural women through art integration.

Key Features of Jeevika Nidhi:

  • Affordable credit: Provides easy access to funds at low interest rates for community members, fostering creativity and innovation through art integration and cultural heritage preservation.
  • Membership base: All registered cluster-level federations of Jeevika will be members, encouraging collaborative learning and cultural appreciation through art education programs.
  • Government support: Both Bihar and the Centre will contribute funds for its operation, promoting cultural awareness and understanding through art & culture initiatives that support cognitive development.
  • Financial transfer: PM Modi transferred ₹105 crore into the institution’s bank account at the launch, kickstarting hands-on learning opportunities in visual arts and other creative fields, emphasizing a constructivist learning approach.
  • Boost to livelihoods: Designed to enhance the entrepreneurial capacity of rural women through competency-based learning, problem-solving skills, and art-integrated education programs that foster cultural identity.

Women-Centric Development Initiatives

  • Empowering rural women: Modi highlighted that India’s growth depends on the empowerment of women through cultural diversity, heritage preservation, and the importance of arts in development, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach to skill-building.
  • Supporting entrepreneurs: Financial assistance will enable women to expand small businesses and develop critical thinking skills through art integrated education and multidisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Complementary schemes: Linked with initiatives like Lakhpati Didi, Drone Didi, and Bank Sakhi to promote active learning, creative potential, and the benefits of arts in skill development, utilizing a cross-curricular pedagogical approach.
  • Income generation: Aim to raise women’s household incomes and ensure socio-economic upliftment through meaningful learning experiences and engagement with folk arts, supporting cognitive development and cultural identity.

Importance of Self-Help Groups (SHGs):
● SHGs in India: Play a vital role in financial inclusion and poverty reduction through experiential learning and art integration.
● Jeevika programme: Launched under the Bihar Rural Livelihoods Project with World Bank support in 2007, emphasizing learning by doing and art-integrated education.
● Core objective: Enhance social capital, promote community institutions, and build women’s collectives through artistic expression, cultural studies, and creative learning, supporting cultural heritage preservation.
