PM Inaugurates Kartavya Bhavan under Central Vista

Why in the News ?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Kartavya Bhavan on August 6, 2025, marking a major step in the Central Vista redevelopment project. The new complex aims to promote administrative efficiency and fulfill the vision of citizen-centric governance while addressing the challenges of aging structures and limited capacity in existing government buildings. This initiative is part of a broader administrative reform agenda to streamline administrative processes and foster agile governance.

Inauguration Highlights and Purpose:

  • PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate Kartavya Bhavan at Kartavya Path in New Delhi on August 6, 2025. The building is strategically located near the India Gate area and not far from Rashtrapati Bhavan, symbolizing its importance in the nation’s administrative landscape.
  • A public address by the Prime Minister will accompany the inauguration ceremony, highlighting the importance of this modern governance infrastructure.
  • Kartavya Bhavan is the first among several Common Central Secretariat buildings under the Central Vista project, replacing colonial-era architecture with a state-of-the-art office complex.
  • The building aims to streamline administrative operations by consolidating ministries previously scattered across Delhi, including Udyog Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Shastri Bhawan, and Krishi Bhawan.
  • It reflects the government’s push towards agile, efficient, and transparent governance, designed to boost productivity and improve overall service delivery.

Architectural Features and Facilities

  • Kartavya Bhavan spans 1.5 lakh square meters, spread across two basements and seven floors, with two basement levels dedicated to parking and utilities.
  • The complex is designed as a state-of-the-art office hub to enable inter-ministerial coordination and create a responsive administrative ecosystem.
  • It incorporates features to enhance efficiency, collaboration, and innovation within the government, including IT-ready workspaces and secure workspaces with integrated electronic surveillance.
  • Modern infrastructure will reduce duplication and delays in administrative processes, streamlining policy execution and public service delivery.
  • The facility also focuses on sustainable and smart building practices aligned with futuristic governance needs, including:
  • Rooftop solar panels and solar water heating systems to reduce energy consumption
  • LED lighting and motion sensors for energy efficiency
  • Rainwater harvesting and solid waste management systems
  • E-vehicle charging stations to promote eco-consciousness
  • Smart lifts and a centralized command system for efficient building management
  • Special glass windows and lightweight partitions to improve employee well-being
  • An advanced energy management system to optimize resource utilization
  • The building incorporates cutting-edge infrastructure such as ID-based access control and a zero-discharge campus, setting new standards for modern governance needs.
  • By co-locating ministries and departments, Kartavya Bhavan aims to create a more cohesive and efficient administrative environment, addressing the limitations of structures built from the 1950s to 1970s.
