India Launches India-UN Projects Supporting Global South

Why in the News?

India has launched four development projects under the India-UN Global Capacity Building Initiative to aid countries in the Global South achieve Sustainable Development Goals. This move strengthens international cooperation and development partnership between India and developing nations. The projects focus on health, food security, census training, and vocational skills, showcasing India’s commitment to development innovations.

Key Initiative and Objectives:

● The India-UN Global Capacity Building Initiative aims to strengthen development partnership with Global South countries through strategic collaboration.

● It supports countries in meeting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through targeted capacity-building projects, contributing to SDG acceleration.

● The initiative is led by the Ministry of External Affairs in strategic collaboration with various UN agencies, including coordination with the UN Resident Coordinator.

● It is a natural extension of India’s longstanding commitment to South-South cooperation and international cooperation.

● Projects are implemented via Indian training institutes under the ITEC framework, promoting institutional excellence in capacity building.

First Phase Projects

Nepal: Support for rice fortification and supply chain management with the World Food Programme, introducing development innovations in food security.

Zambia and Lao PDR: Development of digital health platforms with UNDP assistance, showcasing strategic collaboration in healthcare technology.

Belize, Barbados, St Kitts & Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago: Training government officials in census preparedness with the UN Population Fund, enhancing institutional excellence in data collection.

South Sudan: Provision of vocational training through UNESCO support, demonstrating international cooperation in skills development.

● Training courses will start in September 2025, marking a significant step in SDG acceleration through capacity building.
