Indore Named Cleanest City for Eighth Year

Why in the News ?

In the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, Indore retained its position as India’s cleanest city for the eighth consecutive year, while Ahmedabad was recognised as the cleanest big city. President Droupadi Murmu presented 78 cleanliness awards under various new and existing categories.

Top Performers and New Cleanliness Categories:

●  Indore topped the list of India’s cleanest cities for the eighth time in a row; Surat and Navi Mumbai secured second and third positions.

●  Ahmedabad ranked cleanest city among those with over 10 lakh population, followed by Bhopal and Lucknow.

●  Noida, Chandigarh, and Mysore topped in the 3 to 10 lakh population category.

●  Mira-Bhayandar, Bilaspur, and Jamshedpur led the rankings in the 3–10 lakh Swachh Shahar group.

●  The awards also introduced the Super Swachh League, recognising 23 cities like Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada for sustained excellence in cleanliness.

Special Recognitions and Government Initiatives

●  Prayagraj was awarded Best Ganga Town; Secunderabad Cantonment was honoured as Best Cantonment Board.

●  Visakhapatnam, Jabalpur, and Gorakhpur were declared Best SafaiMitra Surakshit Shehars for sanitation worker welfare.

●  The Uttar Pradesh government, along with Prayagraj Mela Authority and Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, was lauded for urban waste management during Maha Kumbh, which drew 66 crore visitors.

●  34 cities were designated Promising Swachh Shehars, showcasing substantial progress in urban cleanliness.

●  President Murmu praised the Union Housing Ministry for integrating cleanliness with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and promoting eco-conscious urban governance.
