What is IBPS PO?

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection – Probationary Officer (IBPS PO) exam is a national-level banking recruitment exam conducted by IBPS to select candidates for the Probationary Officer (PO) post in various public sector banks in India.

This exam is one of the most competitive and prestigious banking exams, offering a stable career, attractive salary, and growth opportunities in the banking sector.

1. Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: Indian citizen, or subject of Nepal/Bhutan.
  • Age Limit: 20 to 30 years (age relaxation for reserved categories).
  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) from a recognized university.

2. Selection Process:

The selection process consists of three stages:
A. Preliminary Exam (Prelims)
  • Mode: Online
  • Duration: 1 hour (60 minutes)
  • Total Marks: 100
Sections:
  • English Language: 30 questions (30 marks) — 20 minutes
  • Quantitative Aptitude: 35 questions (35 marks) — 20 minutes
  • Reasoning Ability: 35 questions (35 marks) — 20 minutes
      Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer.
      Qualifying Nature: Marks are not counted in the final merit list but are required to qualify for the Mains.
B. Main Exam (Mains)
  • Mode: Online
  • Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes (including Descriptive Paper)
  • Total Marks: 225
Objective Test: (200 marks)
  • Reasoning & Computer Aptitude: 45 questions (60 marks) — 60 minutes
  • General/Economy/Banking Awareness: 40 questions (40 marks) — 35 minutes
  • English Language: 35 questions (40 marks) — 40 minutes
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation: 35 questions (60 marks) — 45 minutes
Descriptive Paper: (25 marks)
  • Letter Writing & Essay — 2 questions (25 marks) — 30 minutes
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for wrong answers.
         Key Point: Marks obtained in the Mains exam are crucial for the final selection as they are considered in the merit list.
C. Interview Round
  • Conducted by: Participating banks and IBPS.
  • Marks: 100
  • Qualifying Marks: Minimum 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PWD).

  • Current affairs
  • Personal background
  • Situational and leadership questions
Important: The weightage of Mains and Interview is 80:20 for the final merit list.

3. Final Selection and Provisional Allotment:

  • The final merit list is prepared using the combined Mains (80%) and Interview (20%) scores.
  • Candidates are allotted banks based on merit and preference.

4. Job Role of IBPS PO:

  • Customer Service: Handling customer queries and complaints.
  • Loans and Advances: Processing loan applications.
  • General Banking Operations: Managing daily transactions, cash flow, etc.
  • Supervisory Role: Leading clerks and junior staff.
  • Business Development: Promoting banking products and services.

5. Salary and Perks:

  • Basic Pay: 36,000 (as per the latest revision).
  • Gross Salary: Around 52,000 to Rs. 55,000 (including allowances like DA, HRA, etc.).
  • Perks: Medical benefits, travel allowances, and pension schemes.
