What is SSC CHSL?

The Staff Selection Commission – Combined Higher Secondary Level (SSC CHSL) Exam is a national-level exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to recruit candidates for clerical and data entry positions in various government ministries, departments, and offices.

This exam is open to 12th pass candidates, making it a great opportunity for those seeking a stable government job right after higher secondary education.

1. Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: Indian citizen, or subject of Nepal/Bhutan.
  • Age Limit: 18 to 27 years (age relaxation for reserved categories).
  • Educational Qualification:
    • For LDC/JSA, PA/SA: Must have passed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board.
    • For DEO in C&AG: Class 12 with Science and Mathematics as subjects.

2. Selection Process:

The SSC CHSL exam is conducted in three tiers:

Tier-I: Computer-Based Test (CBT – Objective Type)

  • Mode: Online
  • Duration: 1 hour (60 minutes)
  • Total Marks: 200 (2 marks per question)
  • Subjects:
    • General Intelligence (25 questions, 50 marks)
    • General Awareness (25 questions, 50 marks)
    • Quantitative Aptitude (Maths) (25 questions, 50 marks)
    • English Language (25 questions, 50 marks)
  • Negative Marking:50 marks deducted for each wrong answer.

Qualifying Nature: The marks obtained are used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II.

 

Tier-II: Descriptive Paper (Pen and Paper Mode)

  • Mode: Offline (written test)
  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Total Marks: 100
  • Language: English or Hindi
  • Type of Questions:
    • Essay writing (200-250 words)
    • Letter/Application writing (150-200 words)

Purpose: To assess candidates’ writing skills, which are crucial for government jobs.

Qualifying Marks: Minimum 33% required to move to the next stage.

Tier-III: Skill Test/Typing Test

The Tier-III stage is qualifying in nature and is conducted according to the post applied for:

  1. Typing Test:
    • For LDC/JSA and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant:
    • English: Typing speed of 35 words per minute (wpm).
    • Hindi: Typing speed of 30 wpm.
    • The test is conducted for 10 minutes.
  2. Skill Test:
    • For Data Entry Operator (DEO):
    • Must have a data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour (KDPH).
    • Duration: 15 minutes.
    • Candidates will be given a printed passage and asked to enter the same into the computer.

Note: The skill test is mandatory but qualifying in nature.

3. Final Selection and Merit List:

  • The final merit list is based on the cumulative performance in Tier-I and Tier-II.
  • Tier-III (Skill Test/Typing Test) is qualifying only.
  • Document Verification (DV): Candidates must produce original documents like Class 10 & 12 certificates, caste certificates (if applicable), etc.

4. Job Roles and Responsibilities:

  • LDC/JSA: Clerical tasks like data entry, file management, and administrative support.
  • PA/SA: Handling mails, maintaining records in post offices.
  • DEO: Data entry and record-keeping in various government departments.

5. Important Points:

  • The SSC CHSL exam is conducted annually.
  • Applications are submitted online via the SSC’s official website ssc.nic.in.
  • The pay scale ranges from 19,900 to Rs. 81,100 depending on the post and department.
